Health coaching is one of the fastest growing healthcare trends today! Why is health coaching successful? It improves health outcomes! Health coaching is not counseling, but rather specific conversations within a special framework that engages patients/individuals to self-discover their own ambivalence to health behavior change. Unlike our traditional health teaching methods we've used in the past, the health coaching framework (having originated from the Motivational Interviewing (MI) concept of Drs. William Miller and Stephen Rollnick) engages "coachees" to maintain optimal health and reduce or minimize acute exacerbations associated with chronic conditions that affect quality outcomes and costs.

Health Coaching recognizes the Coachee as the True Center.

NSHC believes that we as healthcare professionals have traditionally provided health teaching in a "Do these things" type of approach that has not always supported true "patient-centered care". Our traditional teaching methods have placed us in a position to impart knowledge, with the belief that patients/enrollees would follow our direction. However, chronic conditions and associated healthcare costs continue to escalate.

We believe that health teaching is best accomplished through the platform of health coaching and should include eliciting personal goals, engaging the patient/individual to discover ambivalence for needed health behavior change, identifying support for change, minimizing or removing obstacles to change, engaging in change talk, and holding the patient/client accountable during the process. We believe when health coaching is implemented in this manner, that it can help enhance self-management of chronic conditions and improve health outcomes, thereby decreasing costs!
